In 2023, we conducted our latest round of IBD UK Benchmarking. The aim of the IBD UK Benchmarking was to identify how IBD Services are performing against the 2019 IBD Standards, which lay out what high-quality IBD care should look like across the UK. The Benchmarking comprised two surveys: a Patient Survey, asking people with Crohn’s and Colitis to rate the quality of their care over the last 12 months, and a Service Survey, which asked IBD Services to evaluate themselves against the IBD Standards.
In the Service Survey, 64% of all IBD Services in the UK took part, including 126 adult services and 24 paediatric (child) services. For the Patient Survey, we received responses from an astonishing 17,654 people with IBD (or their parents/guardians for paediatric services). The data from both these surveys is crucial in capturing the reality of the state of IBD care in the UK. We would like to express our immense gratitude to everyone who took part in these surveys and helped us to gather this important data.
Using the data from the surveys, we have now been able to produce a national report detailing our key findings from the Benchmarking results. The report also provides a number of recommendations to help ensure standards of IBD care improve. These recommendations, and the full report, will be shared with key decision and policy makers in healthcare across the UK. This includes hospital CEOs and MPs.
